Boating on the Regen

From Zwiesel via Regen, The route from Zwiesel via Regen, Teisnach and Viechtach to Lake Blaibach along the River Schwarzer Regen takes you to Regensburg in five easy day trips. From the Pulling power station (near Blaibach), the Regen has been developed into the European River Walk.

Eginger See

Lake Egingen in the Ilz Valley and Dreiburgenland is one of the few natural swimming lakes in the Bavarian Forest region. Take a dip in the refreshing waters of Lake Egingen, situated between Passau and Deggendorf, not far from Freyung-Grafenau, with its long, Mediterranean-style sandy beach. Soak up the sun on the large sunbathing lawn, on the jetty and on the floating island. Sporty types can play beach volleyball or hire a stand-up paddleboard. Of course, the lake can also be explored at a leisurely pace by pedal boat. Children will have a great time on the large wave slide, the granite water feature and the playground.

Treetop Walk & National Park Centre

Treetop Walk Have you ever walked above the treetops? The 1,300-metre-long TREETOP WALK makes it possible. Here, visitors can enjoy a truly unique perspective. Walking up to 44 metres above the forest floor, you’ll discover completely new views of and across the Bavarian Forest National Park. Wildlife Enclosure Lynx, Ural owls, wolves, bison, otters, bears or capercaillies: in the WILDLIFE ENCLOSURE, experience the typical wild animals that are and were native to the Bavarian Forest. Amidst the emerging forest wilderness, you can observe around 40 species of mammals and birds across over 200 hectares. The animals are housed in spacious, natural enclosures and aviaries. So it’s almost like the wild – including plenty of places for the animal residents to retreat to. A seven-kilometre circular trail, for which you should allow three to four hours, invites you on a discovery tour. Shortcuts are possible.

Lake Moldau

The Lipno Reservoir (also known as the Moldau Reservoir) is situated in the Czech Republic on the border with Austria, within the ‘Šumava National Park and Protected Landscape Area’. With a length of approx. 30 km and a maximum width of approx. 6 km, the lake is the largest in the Czech Republic and a popular destination for swimmers, divers, anglers and enthusiasts of all water sports. There are numerous leisure activities available around the lake, such as the climbing and bike park or the impressive treetop walk in Lipno, offering magnificent views across the lake and into the Czech countryside. It is also popular for walking or cycling around.

Finsterau Open-Air Museum

Across the extensive grounds of our museum, you will find farms and traditional village buildings from the Bavarian Forest. With the exception of the modern entrance building, all the museum buildings have been faithfully relocated to the open-air museum from their original sites. The museum buildings date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Their fittings and furnishings reflect the period from the 1930s to the 1960s. With its carefully selected collection, the Finsterau Open-Air Museum documents rural life in the Bavarian Forest at a time that few people today have experienced first-hand. It presents a bygone rural culture without romanticisation. The informative presentation of the museum’s collection and a varied programme of events and hands-on activities invite visitors to experience the realities of life in those days.

Pullmann City

Pullman City, the ‘living Western town’ in Bavaria, located in Eging am See, is an adventure park idyllically situated on the edge of the Bavarian Forest. The theme park, situated near the Austrian border and not far from the Czech Republic – between Deggendorf and Passau – and directly on the A3 motorway, offers Western-themed entertainment for young and old alike. Here, children and adults can experience Lower Bavaria’s “Wild West”: a daily changing show programme, children’s entertainment, outdoor play areas, a unique dining experience, live music, dance workshops and a different themed event every weekend – there’s something for everyone here!

Steinklamm, 3 km from Spiegelau

The wild and romantic Steinklamm gorge is just a short drive from Villa Barka, where you can experience thundering waterfalls, narrow rocky passages and rustic forest paths. The circular route is well signposted and features numerous vantage points where you can feel the power of the water. Depending on your fitness level, you can take it at a leisurely pace or tackle the walk more energetically – sturdy footwear is all you need. After the gorge walk, local inns invite you to enjoy a traditional Bavarian snack.

Forest bathing begins right on Villa Barka’s doorstep: you immerse yourself in the tranquil forest, breathe in the scent of moss and resin, and feel the stresses of everyday life slip away, bit by bit. On leisurely walks, let your gaze wander over the treetops, the play of light and the little details along the way, and find your way back to yourself in the tranquillity of the Bavarian Forest. In this way, every walk in nature becomes a little mindful retreat – with no set programme, just you and the forest.

Snowshoeing straight from the house

As soon as there’s enough snow on the ground, you can strap on your snowshoes right outside the front door and quietly make your way through the snow-covered meadows and woods. You decide for yourself whether to go for a short walk to wake yourself up or spend several hours out and about. Villa Barka’s peaceful location at an altitude of around 750 metres creates a real winter atmosphere, often with a landscape blanketed in deep snow. Back at the holiday flat, you can warm up with a hot cup of tea and enjoy the view of the white landscape.

Downhill and cross-country skiing right on our doorstep

If you’re in a hurry and there’s enough snow, all you need to do is head down to Eppenschlag: a slope, a lift, and somewhere to stop for a bite to eat. It’s certainly enough for a few runs, perhaps even under floodlights. Cross-country skiers will find a well-maintained network of trails in Eppenschlag and Spiegelau, which you can reach quickly from Villa Barka. You glide through wide meadows and quiet forest paths, enjoying beautiful views of the rolling landscape of the Bavarian Forest at every turn.

Hiking around the holiday flat

How about a short hike to the Hessenstein? There are plenty of hiking trails starting right from the doorstep of Villa Barka – no need to drive anywhere; just open the door and set off. You can take a leisurely stroll across meadows and along country lanes, wander through mixed forests, or plan longer walks into the hills of the Bavarian Forest. Depending on the season, you’ll experience flowering meadows, colourful forests or tranquil winter landscapes. The peaceful surroundings make every walk a little break from everyday life.

What’s more, you can simply enjoy the natural surroundings right from the holiday flat: soak up the sun on the terrace, let your gaze wander over meadows and woods, and gaze at the starry sky in the evening. Surrounded by woodland and nature Our proximity to the Bavarian Forest National Park not only shapes the landscape – it defines the entire playing experience. No traffic noise, no urban hustle and bustle, just peace and quiet, fresh air and nature that you can experience with all your senses. Ancient trees line the course, the songs of rare birds accompany your round, and the entire site is designed so that nature and sport coexist harmoniously. Here, golf goes beyond the game – it becomes an experience in harmony with the surroundings.

The Arber, Geißkopf and Mitterfirmiansreuth ski resorts, and others

The Mitterfirmiansreut (“Mitterdorf”) Ski Centre on the Almberg is a family-friendly ski resort with several lifts and mainly easy to moderately difficult slopes; thanks to its location, it is considered to have particularly reliable snow conditions. The Großer Arber is the largest and best-known ski resort in the Bavarian Forest and, as the “King of the Bavarian Forest”, offers a variety of slopes of all difficulty levels, modern lifts and a comprehensive range of activities for families and keen skiers. At Geißkopf near Bischofsmais, you can look forward to around eight kilometres of perfectly groomed runs, a fun park, a toboggan run and floodlit slopes – ideal for anyone seeking variety. In addition, the Bavarian Forest boasts many smaller, quiet ski slopes and lifts that are easily accessible from Villa Barka and are perfect for relaxed days on the slopes away from the hustle and bustle.

Passau – the beautiful city where three rivers meet, 49 km 

Passau is the famous ‘City of Three Rivers’, situated at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz, and boasts an impressive Baroque old town on a narrow spit of land between the rivers. St Stephen’s Cathedral, home to one of the world’s largest church organs, the Veste Oberhaus fortress and the Three Rivers Corner are among the city’s most famous sights. Its southern charm, narrow streets and squares, as well as numerous cafés and boats, make Passau a worthwhile destination during your holiday in the Bavarian Forest.

Krummau – a picture-perfect town, UNESCO World Heritage Site, 111 km

Krumau (Český Krumlov) is a small, picture-perfect town in South Bohemia, situated picturesquely in a bend of the Vltava River, with its old town almost entirely surrounded by the river. The historic town centre, with its narrow streets, colourful Renaissance and Baroque townhouses, and the imposing castle and palace complex overlooking it, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Thanks to this unique combination of a river bend, medieval architecture and a lively café and cultural scene, Krumau is considered one of the most romantic destinations in Central Europe.

Rachel, Arber, Lusen – our most famous peaks

Rachel, Lusen and Arber are three of the most famous peaks in the Bavarian Forest and are easily accessible from Villa Barka as day trips. They combine scenic hikes with a rustic mountain hut atmosphere and authentic “Bavarian Forest moments” – perfect for active holidays. Rachel captivates visitors with its tranquil primeval forests, Lake Rachel and sweeping views stretching as far as the Alps on clear days. The hike is somewhat challenging and therefore ideal for experienced walkers seeking that authentic national park experience. On the Lusen, you’ll discover the famous boulder field summit and the nature trail through forests that are regenerating following the bark beetle infestation. A hike at sunrise or sunset is particularly atmospheric, when the rocks glow in the warm light. The Großer Arber, known as the ‘King of the Bavarian Forest’, offers a well-developed hiking and skiing area with a cable car, restaurants and panoramic trails. Both leisure hikers and active sports enthusiasts will find something to suit them here – hiking in summer, and skiing or winter hiking in winter.

Mauth-Finsterau, Spiegelau 

The region around Spiegelau, Mauth and Grafenau, together with Neuschönau, forms one of the most extensive and snow-sure cross-country skiing areas in the Bavarian Forest. With the Mauth-Finsterau cross-country skiing centre, the area is a paradise for cross-country skiers, offering everything from easy beginner trails to challenging long-distance routes

Deggendorf – the gateway to the Bavarian Forest, 31 km

Deggendorf lies directly on the Danube near the mouth of the Isar and is regarded as the ‘gateway to the Bavarian Forest’ – making it an ideal base for exploring the region. The historic old town, with its Gothic Old Town Hall, the Grabkirche and many lovingly restored town houses, is perfect for a leisurely stroll and a stop for refreshments. On the banks of the Danube, the Donaupark, with its promenade, play areas and green spaces, as well as events such as the Donaufest and Christmas market, offers further reasons to pay a visit to Deggendorf.

Aiderbichl Estate, Bavaria, near Deggendorf

Since 2006, Gut Aiderbichl has been located not only in Salzburg and Iffeldorf, but also in Eichberg near Deggendorf. Nestled amongst rolling hills on the edge of the Bavarian Forest, a new place where people and animals can come together has been created – a symbol of humanity.

Hiking: Buchberger Leite
and Goldener Steig

The Goldene Steig is a historic salt-traders’ route between Bavaria and Bohemia that winds through the low mountain ranges of the Bavarian Forest, combining the experience of nature with fascinating history. Across several routes totalling around 145 kilometres, you’ll hike along ancient trade routes, past forests, meadows and small villages – perfect for day trips and multi-day tours.[Bavarian-Forest +2] The Buchberger Leite is considered one of the most impressive gorges in the Bavarian Forest and runs between Freyung and Ringelai along the Wolfsteiner Ohe. Along an approximately eight-kilometre themed hiking trail, you’ll experience a wild and romantic stream gorge with rock faces, footbridges, bridges and information boards on nature and former timber use – a real highlight just a few minutes’ drive from Villa Barka.[bayern +4] Hiking in the Bavarian Forest means a vast network of around 7,000 kilometres of marked trails, ranging from leisurely strolls and themed trails to challenging summit hikes. Between the National Park, the Nature Park and historic routes such as the Goldsteig and Goldener Steig, you’ll find suitable tours for every season – always accompanied by plenty of woodland, tranquillity and authentic low-mountain scenery.

Regensburg - UNESCO World Heritage Site, 120 km away

Regensburg lies on the Danube and boasts one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Europe, which, together with Stadtamhof, is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is characterised by the Gothic St Peter’s Cathedral and the almost 900-year-old Stone Bridge, which is regarded as a masterpiece of medieval architecture and connects the old town with Stadtamhof. Amidst narrow streets, squares, cafés, bars and shops, the city combines a lively university atmosphere with historic charm – often affectionately referred to as ‘Italy’s northernmost city’.
